Thomas Herbert Owen

Peacefully with his family at his side, Thomas Herbert Owen passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the Grace Hospice. Thomas was born to Robert and Jane Owen in Melita, Manitoba on February 2, 1922. He was the youngest of eight children. At the age of five the family moved to Winnipeg where Tom spent his growing years. Tom joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 11 where he flew in Lancaster bombers. He was proud of his service for his country, but rarely spoke of it. After the war he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs and then joined what is now known as the Canada Revenue Agency as an auditor. He remained there until his retirement in 1978.

Thomas is survived by and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 63 years, Sophie, daughters Barbara and Susan, grandsons Brydon (Joyanne) and Ryan, as well as great grandson Kaden and great granddaughter Zolie, He is also survived by his sister Jean of Ottawa. He was predeceased by his son Robert in 2016.

Tom was the most unpretentious, loving, generous and selfless person. He was an exemplary husband, father and grandfather. Family always came first and nothing was too inconvenient or difficult when it came to helping them or just making their lives easier or happier.

Tom also loved all animals, but especially cats. There was always a cat in the house whom he liked to refer to as “our cat”.

We must also mention that Tom had a special attachment to Salisbury House! For many, many years Tom would meet “the guys” at the Salisbury on Ellice Avenue. The day would not start off right for him without this ritual. Thanks to all the employees and friends who helped Tom enjoy this simple pleasure.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospice as well as the staff from the Comforts of Home care for the support and comfort they offered Tom during his final days. We also give special thanks to Rev. Aubrey Hemminger for his help during this difficult time.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue, followed by a reception where family and friends are invited to celebrate Tom’s life.

Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 9Z9 or to another charity of your choice.

“O, give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for His mercy endureth forever.” Psalm 136:1
