PHILIP STANLEY YOUNG
April 21, 1920 – December 3, 2013
Peacefully, on December 3, 2013, after a long, well lived 93 years, Dad passed away at St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit.
Left to celebrate and cherish his life are his children: Linda, Craig (Jill), Terry (Sherry), Randy, and Lisa (George), 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. He was predeceased by our Mom, Alice in 1971, our sister, Lori in May 2013 and his long time sweetheart, Kathleen (Kae) Davis on December 2, 2013.
Dad was born in Kenton, Manitoba and lived there until he was 19. He started his work career as a projectionist in Carmen, Virden, Minnedosa and finally as the manager of the College Theatre in Winnipeg.
He moved onto a long successful business career in the home building industry. He was one of the founding partners and President of Home Development Company Ltd. He was in charge of building homes in Winnipeg, Thompson, Lynn Lake, Moose Jaw, and Thunder Bay. He was a lifetime member of the Manitoba Home Builders Association and Past President (67-68). His picture still hangs in the board room. He was presented with the National House Builders Association Presidential Award of Honour in 1969. Dad went on to work for Ladco as the Vice President of Special Projects, after which he took an early retirement.
Dad had a very active lifestyle during his retirement. He and Kae travelled extensively. They wintered for many years in Indian Lake, Texas where they had a winter home. They also travelled to China, Mexico, Barbados, Hawaii, different parts of Europe, and enjoyed an Alaskan cruise.
In the early 60’s Dad purchased a family cabin at Gull Lake which was the home to many family celebrations. He introduced the family to water skiing and sailing on a Hobie Cat 16. We all have wonderful memories of the good times had there.
Dad excelled in sports in high school and was an avid golfer and became a long time member of Southwood Golf and Country Club. He also golfed other Manitoba courses with his golfing buddies, the F. Fer’s (Fine Fellows). Dad especially enjoyed hosting the golf windup at Gull Lake right up until this past summer.
He also enjoyed curling, whether he was a spectator or a player. He curled from the time he was a kid in Kenton. He was a member of the Wildwood Curling Club. He travelled to the World Curling Championship in Grand Forks with two of his sons in 2008.
He golfed and curled up until this past year.
Dad and Kae enjoyed the Goldeyes and had minipacks for many years.
They were patrons of the Arts having season tickets to the Winnipeg Symphony as well as the Manitoba Opera.
Family was extremely important to Dad. He relished in our Christmas gatherings each year. He especially loved being Santa’s helper. He would spend weeks putting together goody bags for everyone. He insisted on buying a Christmas gift for every single family member.
He was a great family supporter proudly attending graduations, concerts, plays, recitals and somehow remembering everyone’s birthday with a phone call and a small gift.
Dad was a man of class and dignity, a true gentleman full of charisma. He was gracious and unselfish, always putting others before himself. He felt he was extremely blessed with his abundance of family and friends. He was extremely sociable and a great host. He especially enjoyed happy hours at the lake with friends and neighbours.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, December 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Dad had asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Manitoba CancerCare, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of your choice.
When a loved one becomes a memory that memory becomes a treasure.
