Muriel Revel

Muriel (Auntie Moo) Revel passed away peacefully April 1, 2017. Left to mourn are, her sister Audrey McTaggart and children, Stephanie, Greg and Jill. Muriel was predeceased by her brother Gerald Lanchbery, leaving his children, Sheldon and Alison to mourn. She is also survived by Lois Rutherford, Mary Revel and their families along with special niece Nancy.

Muriel grew up in Cartwright, Manitoba. She was too much of a free spirit to ever truly grow up and was loved for her youthful enthusiasm. She was an insatiable reader. This caused her to stay up late at night and often late for school the next day. It served her well as she completed elementary and high school years without being required to write an exam.

Growing up, Muriel could be seen wearing a cowboy hat with a gun holster about her waist. She told everyone she wanted to be a cop. Later she look to the skies and dreamt of being a stewardess. She was a dreamer but with purpose. She would find her true calling as a nurse.

Muriel took her training at the St. Boniface School of nursing. She began her practice in Neepawa, as an operating and ward nurse. She tried a period of nursing with the Navy in Halifax but would return to Neepawa. Muriel bought her first car and learned about rack and pinion steering and many mechanical things. Most importantly, she learned how to drive.

In 1961 she married John Revel. Together they ran the Knockearn family farm at Eden. On the farm they raised the cow (Vache), piglets and Pogo the pup. Tragically, John died at the age of 47. She left the farm and returned to her nursing career in Neepawa.

Muriel later moved to Winnipeg where she nursed at Deer Lodge. She retired early due to health issues.

Retired from nursing opened the door to being the ‘Queen of Garage Sales’. Muriel, Audrey and Gerald reunited to continue their youthful hi-jinx. No profit was made but fun was had by all including customers. These stories provided many laughs at family gatherings.

She loved the holidays but never cooked a dinner. Her sole purpose was to provide the entertainment. She made up games only she understood and there was always ‘Auntie Moo’s readings. She loved her birthday, August 10th, forever etched on our minds. Odd birthday cakes and gifts provided entertainment to the day.

Muriel endeared herself to many keeping in touch with former classmates and teachers from her formative years. She would return yearly, cake in hand, to thank the nuns that helped her as she began her nursing career.

She was known only as Auntie Moo to her nieces and nephews, great and great- great nieces and nephews. Muriel was a very hard name to say for youngsters. She and John had a cow thus ended up with Auntie Moo. That name stuck for 60 years to family and friends alike. Courteous she was. No one had to open a door when she was near. Maybe, Muriel will be the keeper of ‘The Gate’.

A private internment will take place later in the year.
