March 20, 2017
George Kenneth "Ken" Collins
On March 20, 2017, George Kenneth "Ken" Collins, 89, died in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He leaves his son Wes, daughter Kelly Gross (Kevin), and daughter Jackie; his grandchildren Marcus Collins, Destiny and Darris Gross, Sam and Lauren Collins - Besko.
Ken was born in Brandon, Manitoba the son of Floyd and Nellie Collins. Ken enjoyed a happy childhood in Brandon where his dad, Floyd ran a gas station. Ken and his family moved to Vancouver for a year in his late teens and his family moved back to Winnipeg.
In Winnipeg, Ken worked for the Free Press and he later moved into the appliance sales field. He worked in this role for the balance of his career with General Electric and Westinghouse, which later became Hotpoint and Camco.
In 1948 he married Frances Dziedzic. Ken and Fran enjoyed 44 years of marriage until Frances’ death in 1993. Ken went on many vacations with Fran to warm climates and together they took their family on many wonderful road and train trips from coast to coast of Canada.
In later years Ken also enjoyed trips to Portugal and Scotland with wife Jean.
Ken had many interests and made friends through all of his interests. He was a Shriner and he had an opportunity to enjoy his love of music and comedy playing saxophone with the Khartum Komedians. He loved to boat, camp, fish, and to go to hockey and football games with his children.
Ken was a wonderful and engaged papa to his grandchildren. He was always available to be back up babysitter and he loved to laugh with his grandkids. He had a love for animals and in particular dogs.
Ken’s family would like to thank the staff at Charleswood Care Centre for their care of dad and kindness shown to our family in the last weeks of his life, and in particular Gerard, Bev, Ellen, Elizabeth, Reggie, Delia, Lois and Melanie.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service celebrating Ken’s life will be held on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at 2:00pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.
