J. FRANK JOHNSTON
September 3, 1929 - February 7, 2017

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of J. Frank. He will be greatly missed by his wife Hazel of 66 years; his children, Robyn Johnston, Scott (Karen) Johnston, Donna (Eugene) Matlashewski; nine grandchildren, Jay (Erin), Colin, Reid, Cam, Steven (Sara), Brett (Mike), Bryce (Laura), Mackenzie, Teghan (René); two great-granddaughters, Claire and Emily, extended family and friends. J. Frank was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. He demonstrated a strong love and commitment to community service, as alderman/deputy mayor in St. James from 1964 to 1972 and as Progressive Conservative (PC) provincial MLA from 1969 to 1988. He served in Sterling Lyon's government as Minister responsible for the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation and Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. His love of community extended to numerous other activities including playing Santa for many years at Mount Carmel Clinic, Y.M.C.A and others. In recognition of his contributions, Mandeville Park on Ness Avenue was re-named in his honor in 2011. He attended St. John's College, was past president of the Assiniboine Golf Club, member of the St. Charles Country Club and also member of the Sturgeon Creek Masonic Lodge. J. Frank along with his wife Hazel established and operated a successful family business, JFJ Agency, for many years. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, from attending numerous grandchildren's concerts, events and hockey games to helping his children and grandchildren in countless other ways. His other passions included curling, golf and relaxing and socializing at the family cabin at Clear Lake. A Celebration of J. Frank's Life will take place on Thursday February 16, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive.
