Janette Victoria Stephenson (nee Leochko)

It is with deep sadness we share the sudden passing of Janette Victoria Stephenson (nee Leochko).

Janette is survived by her two sons, Matt (Erika) and Jared; their father Larry; her sister Doreen (Jerry MacLean), and niece Melanie (Brian) and their sons, Adam and Shane. She was predeceased by her parents Ethel and Peter Leochko and brother Jim.

Born January 15, 1950 in Winnipeg, she attended Bannatyne School, St. Charles School, John Taylor Collegiate and the University of Manitoba. After attaining her Bachelor of Education, and in later years her Post Baccalaureate. She taught in Kenora and then went on to become a resource teacher in St. James- Assiniboia and River East Transcona; finally retiring from Ecole James Nisbet in Seven Oaks School Division.

Janette will be remembered for her big heart, infectious laugh and her values of honesty, integrity and hard work. Her strength came from the love of her boys and watching them develop into caring adults. She fostered many close, long lasting friendships and loved her get togethers at the lake, Camp Waterfall, over a good book or dinner or just being together. Her love of travel took her to many destinations over the years.

After retirement, she enjoyed the rewards of volunteering at Meals on Wheels, Cancer Care and weekly assisting new Canadians with their English. She was honored with the first Ester Ginpil Spirit award in 2013 from Cancer Care. Singing with “Margaret’s Choir” was also cherished time. Sadly, she was often challenged due to a long and unrelenting struggle with depression. In the end, she was too weary to continue. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Her spirit will live on in our hearts and memories. May she rest in peace.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 2:00 PM.
