Jacob Vanderhorst
August 21, 1924 to July 25, 2016

It is with great sorrow that the family announces the peaceful passing of Jack on July 25, at the age of 91, with his family by his side.

Jack was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Truce Vanderhorst, originally from Holland, and siblings Harry, Charlie, Betty, Vera and Petranella. Jack is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 67years, Shirley and children Lynda, Terry (Abe), Gerald (Charlene) and Patty (Ken) and grandchildren Kendra (Andy), KJ (Caylen), Michael, Marshall, Danielle and Ryan. He is also survived by two younger siblings John(Ann) and Margaret, and numerous nieces and nephews and grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Born on August 21st, 1924 in Winnipeg, Jack was the fourth of eight siblings. He was a strong boy and grew up helping his father and brothers market garden 10 acres of land in NK from age 6 to 18.

Awards won as a paperboy would later lead Jack into a sales career. He was captivating, had a wonderful sense of humour and an incredible zest for life. He was a long-time member of the Red River Drug Rangers, East St. Paul Curling Club and Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association, which he held the position of VP for eight years.

Jack loved to tell his children and grandchildren stories of his youth and to recite sonnets at family gatherings. Living and growing up along the Red River, he loved to swim, canoe and high dive off the Bergen Cut off bridge. He had a natural athletic ability and although his childhood dream of becoming a professional hockey player was not to be, Jack took great pride in having played with NHL great Bill Ezinicki on the Excellsur Hockey Team for three years. He became an avid hockey fan of his son and grandsons, watching their many games as they grew up, and later became an overall avid sports fan.

Jack met his beloved Shirl at a dance and married her two years later on October 9th, 1948. They built their first home on Essar Avenue, where they had four children, three daughters and a son. Jack’s sales career spanned some 30 years. He worked for Blue Ribbon Coffee and Beecham Products for 25 years, then started his own textile sales agency and later built and marketed life-size fibreglass animals.

Besides his family, in whom he took great pride and joy, horses were one of his greatest pleasures. In 1960 Jack and Shirl built their family home and ranch in East St. Paul, where for over 20 years they raised, bred and raced thoroughbred horses. They sold their ranch in July of 2012 and moved into Edgewood Estates, which overlooked their first house on Essar Avenue and the property Jack gardened as a boy.

Jack was the family patriarch and the anchor. He met life’s challenges and health concerns with a fighting spirit, overcoming cancer, an aneurysm and two heart attacks. He took pride in living a healthy life and was often complimented on looking much younger than he was. He will be long remembered for his strength of mind and character, his great pride in his children and grandchildren and his generous and loving spirit in welcoming and helping out family and friends.

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 3rd at 2:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. Donations in Jack’s memory may be made to L’Arche Winnipeg or charity of choice.
