Harvey Lee McIntyre FLMI, CLU, CFP

Peacefully in his sleep, Harvey Lee McIntyre passed away on February 19th, 2017 at the age of 90. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years Lorna, sons Brian, Ken, loving daughter Lori (Randy); grandchildren Taylor, Connor, Jordyn, Nolan, Nathan and Dayna; and granddaughter Kara and great granddaughter Lily, of Florida.

Harvey was born in Tacoma, Washington, on June 10, 1926. Son of Thomas Eldon McIntyre, master mechanic from Clearwater, MB and Osie Brammer from Chicago, IL. The Depression caused the family to move back to Clearwater. Illness claimed Osie, and Harvey was raised from the age of ten by his aunt and uncle, Mabel and Reg Burgess.

He attended Clearwater Public and Crystal City High schools, leaving the U of M before graduating to spend two years as a research operator in HBM&S mill labs in Flin Flon and as a chief lifeguard at Phantom Lake resort. He and his high school sweetheart, Lorna were married in Crystal City on March 10, 1951 and had three children.

Harvey returned to Winnipeg and joined Sovereign Life as an agent in 1950, transferring to Head Office in 1951. There he developed a statistical database for an IBM installation, developed a new training course for agents and managers, and edited Envoy, the company field magazine. He returned to sales in 1956 as a Great-West Life agent.

RRSP was introduced in 1957, which planted an altruistic seed that later bloomed in Harvey – to assist the average person in achieving financial independence. After acquiring his financial planning certifications, he began his tenacious attacks against the marketing practices of the financial services industry culminating in 1982 with the founding of Macatax Ltd, which provided financial services to the “little guy”. His series of Getting Ahead Financially programs aired on cable TV across western Canada. Several of the resulting hundreds of clients helped develop wealth creation – a new system described on his website. Subsequently, Harvey authored “The Great Canadian Rip-Off and how to avoid it” and was in the process of writing another book at the time of his passing.

During their life together Harvey and Lorna enjoyed time with good friends sailing in the Caribbean, cruising on the Red River, and time in Hawaii. His wine-making skills were legendary, or so he led us to believe! Harvey’s children fondly remember family times at Rock Lake; his mastery of the charcoal BBQ and occasional wrestling match with oversized turkeys; his corny sense of humor and foremost, his steadfast honesty and integrity, which has been ingrained in all of our lives.

At Harvey’s request, there will be no service.
