GRETA PAULINE SMITH

Peacefully surrounded by the love of her family, Greta, of Winnipeg, MB, passed away at Golden West Centennial Lodge in the early hours of Monday, February 13th, 2017 at the age of 90.

She is survived by her loving devoted husband William R. Smith, five children; Sharon Linklater of Winnipeg, Brad (Yvonne Sikkenk) Smith of Shuswap Lake, BC, Donald (Lorna) Smith of Kenora, ON, Corinne (Ray) Smith of Grindstone, MB and William B. Smith of Winnipeg; six grandchildren James, Christienne, Shaun, Mandy, Shelby and Reed; as well as nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Greta was born November 6th, 1926 at home in Fort Frances, ON to parents Harold and Rosalie Armstrong. She grew up in the Great Depression era and through the Second World War years alongside her eleven siblings; sisters Phoebe, Dorothy, Sylvia, Vivian, Shirley, Betty, Anita; and brother Reginald, Harold Jr., Glen and Roger.

She worked at the town telephone office in Fort Frances for several years in the late 1940’s before moving to Winnipeg where she worked until retirement at the Salvation Army Grace General Hospital. This was a time in her life of which she was inherently proud. Throughout her life she maintained an unwavering faith in God and passed that along to all of her family.

Greta was a connoisseur of life, taking an interest in everything from cooking to painting, music to movies, writing to collecting, and in everything that others around her were interested in as well. She would listen intently as you told her of that goal you scored in hockey or that thing you did at school, and with 100% focus on you. Her innate willingness to take the time to listen and be interested in everything you had to say was incredible, as was her penchant for never missing a birthday wish or keeping in touch with distant relatives with hand-written cards and letters.

She remained at home for as long as possible in her final years being cared for by her husband Bill and eldest daughter Sharon, and thus was close to family which she dearly loved. She was a very special lady who was loved by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

Special thanks to the Home Care staff and the staff at Grace Hospital and Golden West Centennial Lodge for their care and compassion.

A Celebration of Greta’s Life will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family would ask that donations be made to the Canadian Salvation Army in Greta’s honour.
