Gloria Ackerley
(nee Fashoway)
July 15, 1940-September 1, 2016
After a long battle with cancer Gloria passed away at Riverview Health Centre.
Gloria was born July 15th, 1940 in Alonsa, MB to Joseph Anthony Fashoway and Mary Turko. When Gloria was 16 years old she left Alonsa with her mother and older sister and moved to Portage La Prairie. She lived there with her mother until her marriage to George Marszalek in 1959. They had three children. Sadly, in 1970 Gloria and George divorced. She went on to marry again and divorced in 1979. By this time Gloria had lived in Red Deer, AB, Brandon and Portage La Prairie (including Southport) MB. She moved to Winnipeg in 1979 and started work as a Cashier at Safeway on Ness & Sturgeon Rd. Gloria and George remained friends over the years and would eventually reunite in their St. James home until his passing in 1994. Gloria retired from Safeway in 2006 after 27 years of service.

Gloria was a quiet, introspective person, who appreciated a simpler life and never got bogged down in excessive commercialism; she always stayed true to her own heart. Gloria was so proud to be a Nana and her grandson was the light of her life. She was passionate about animals especially cats and birds. Gloria was someone who saw and loved the hearts and souls of lesser creatures and she dearly nurtured and loved her cats. She had a wealth of knowledge when it came to gardening, it was a true passion of hers and purple flowers were her favorite. She would always take the time to stop and smell the roses and loved long walks or strolling through gardens soaking in the beauty around her. She was fortunate enough to be able to travel to places such as New York, Los Angeles and her favorite place Hawaii. Gloria treasured her family, she loved cooking and enjoyed reading.
As we walk on our paths we never know the time of His choosing we can only have faith that before He calls us forever home, we will have lived well, loved well and left the world a tiny bit better than when we arrived. Gloria knew this lesson and did the best she could to be a good mother, sister, nana, aunt, and daughter.

Gloria was predeceased by her parents and George. Gloria will be heartbreakingly missed and mourned by her children; Travis, Gordon and Alana (Gord), grandson, Sean, her sister, Josephine (Nick), nieces and nephew; Shona (Peter), Chris (Raffaela), and Tara (Marie), cousins and friends.
We don't know how life will continue without her.
The family wishes to thank the staff members at CancerCare MB, Grace General Hospital, Seven Oaks Hospital, Health Sciences Centre, Riverview Healthcare Centre, paramedics, palliative care nurses, WRHA and Grace Hospice. Over the past 6 months there were so many caregivers helping Mom and our family, we will forever be grateful for the compassion and care you gave.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to any Humane Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Riverview Healthcare Centre or other charities that would represent her passions.
Cremation has taken place and a service was held at Chapel Lawn Cemetery on September 7, 2016.
