Bruce Linney

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bruce Linney on March 6, 2017 at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma (nee Forseth); children Barbara (Joseph), Deborah (Mark), Gordon (Junko), and Darrell; brothers Raymond (Joyce) and Robert (Pat); sisters Grace and Bernice; sister-in-law Joyce; brother-in-law Keith; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Daniel and Gertrude (nee Langton) Linney; brothers Charlie (Dorothy), Gordon (Doris), and John (Mae); sister Edith (Alex); brothers-in-law Godfrey, Ralph, Donald (Rhoda), Bruce, and Nick; and sister-in-law Ev.

Bruce was born in Winnipeg and attended St. John’s High School. He retired from the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1991 after 38 years. At the time of his retirement he was Manager of Pricing (The Grain Team). After retiring, he devoted countless volunteer hours to various organizations.

Bruce’s hands were never idle. He learned carpentry skills from his brother-in-law and friend Alex, and put them to good use at his home and cottage, as well as for the benefit of family and friends. When he didn’t have a project on the go, he enjoyed “puttering around,” golfing and spending time with family at the lake.

He was a talented singer and was a popular figure on the Winnipeg music and entertainment scene in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a member of the James Duncan Singers (later, The Internationals), with whom he performed in over 1000 shows at the International Inn’s Hollow Mug Theatre Restaurant as well as at other events and venues in Winnipeg and Western Canada. He also sang with orchestras, choral groups, and choirs. For over 20 years, he was the tenor soloist at various Winnipeg churches. He sang the tenor role of Obadiah at Knox United Church’s 100th Anniversary Celebration performance of Elijah, and was featured as a soloist in performances of the Messiah and The Creation and numerous other religious choral works over the years. Later in life he brightened the lives of Winnipeg’s senior citizens as a member of the Seniors Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Until the end, music brought him joy.

Family and friends may wish to consider celebrating Bruce’s life and love of music with a donation in his memory to the Winnipeg Music Festival or to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Bruce was laid to rest on March 11, 2017 near his parents at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.

“If there's another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this.” Robert Burns
