Andrew Macdonald Duncan

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather Andrew Macdonald Duncan on March 14, 2017. Dad was predeceased by his wife, best friend and soul mate Wilma who died shortly after their 70th wedding anniversary in 2013. He is survived by his children, Glenn (Ollie) and Gail (Kent) and his grandchildren Bradley (Caitlin) and Jamie.
Dad was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1919 to Andrew and Ellen Duncan. He enlisted in the RAF shortly before the start of second World War. In December 1940 he was stationed at the air training base in Carberry, Manitoba where he met mum. After the war they settled in Dundee, Scotland but immigrated back to Canada in 1948.
Dad spent most of his career as an accountant with various municipal governments. He was treasurer of the City of St. James, Director of Finance for the newly formed Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg and Budget Director of the City of Winnipeg. He was one of two Canadians who sat on the board of directors for the Municipal Finance Officers Association of North America. He was on the boards of the VON, the Corps of Commissionaires, and the Red River Exhibition Association and most notably on the interim board of directors for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra which was tasked with the restructuring that eventually saved the Orchestra from bankruptcy and dissolution.
Mum and dad travelled the world and enjoyed their winters in Florida, the Bahamas and Arizona, but dad’s favorite place was still always the cottage that they built at West Hawk Lake. He loved adventure, going white water rafting and taking up downhill skiing in his retirement. He still talked about flying in a biplane and going parasailing when he was 88.
We would like to thank the amazing staff at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. We would especially like to thank Donna Bennett and Anna Thiessen for their care and daily visits.
Dad, we will miss your sense of humour, your encouragement and your steadfast love. Rest in peace.
As per his wishes, a private service has been held. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
I would like the memory of me to be a happy one
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun
Of happy memories that I’ve left now my life is done.
